Definitions for use in the UK National Breed Inventory
Updated 2 June 2025
1. Definition of a breed for the purpose of the UK National Breed Inventory
The is a subspecific group of domestic livestock with definable and identifiable external characteristics that enable it to be separated by visual appraisal from other similarly defined groups within the same species.
In the UK context, this is an interbreeding population of husbanded or formerly husbanded domesticated animals of consistent genotype and phenotype with a recognised history and administrative framework.
Within a given breed, it is not appropriate to split that breed on the basis of minor trait differences. Therefore, separate breed recognition will not be granted for subpopulations of the same breed where different phenotypes are attributable to a single or minor trait difference, for example, different coat or fleece colours or patterns, polled versus horned.
Individual breed societies must decide whether or not they wish to register such different phenotypes as separate sub-populations within their breeding book.
2. Eligibility of a 바카라 사이트˜breed바카라 사이트™ for inclusion in the UK National Breed Inventory
To be included in the UK National Breed Inventory a breed should satisfy both of the following conditions:
- the breed fulfils, or potentially fulfils, a role in the rural economy 바카라 사이트“ this condition may be satisfied by evidence that the breed has been, at some time in the past, viable in numbers that exceed criteria for being at risk by United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) standards
- less than 10% of the aggregate genetic contributions to the population over the last 4 generations are derived from other resources distinct from foreign herd books recognised as representing the same breed
2.1 Evidence
You will need to provide evidence:
- that the breed has been, at some time in the past, viable in numbers that exceed the criteria for being at risk by United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) standards
- of aggregate genetic contributions
You can use evidence with (preferably published) information from:
- breeding books
- breeding records
- information previously held on National Electronic Database (NED)
- other recognised data sources
3. Definition of a 바카라 사이트˜native breed바카라 사이트™
For a breed to be considered native, the breed should satisfy all of the following criteria:
- the breed satisfies the criteria for inclusion in the UK National Breed Inventory, as defined in section 2
- breed history documents the breed origin within the UK (including from an amalgamation of native breeds) or that the UK has formed the primary environment for the development of the breed
- breed history documents its presence in the UK in its current adapted form for a qualifying period of at least 40 years or 6 generations, whichever is the longer period of time
- less than 10% of the aggregate genetic contributions to the population over the qualifying period are derived from other resources distinct from foreign herd books recognised as representing the same breed
- a minimum of 80% of the genetic contributions from any generation of ancestors within the qualifying period must come from ancestors that were (i) registered in the breed바카라 사이트™s herd book and (ii) born in the UK
You may be able to seek an exception to the final criteria if the breed is part of an approved conservation scheme. All conservation schemes that may affect native status should be notified to Defra and the Devolved 바카라 사이트s through the UK Genetics for Livestock and Equines (UKGLE) Committee for prior approval.
3.1 Evidence
You can provide evidence (preferably published) from information in:
- breeding books
- breeding records
- information previously held on NED
- other recognised data sources
4. Definition of 바카라 사이트˜heritage semi-feral바카라 사이트™
The following series of tests should be used to define heritage semi-feral for animal genetic resources (AnGR) in the UK National Breed Inventory:
- the breed itself satisfies the criteria for inclusion in the UK National Breed Inventory, as defined in section 2
- the breed is not subject to routine handling of any kind
- more than 90% of the population have been born to feral parents, over 2 generations
- has evidenced a cultural link to the area
4.1 Evidence
You can provide evidence (preferably published) from information in:
- breeding books
- breeding records
- organisation rules
- other recognised data sources
5. Definition of 바카라 사이트˜Geographic concentration바카라 사이트™
95% or more of the breed animal numbers are clustered within a 65km radius of the breed바카라 사이트™s mean geographic centre.
5.1 Evidence
You can provide geo-location information of all herds or flocks within breeding books.
