From 11 December 2014 to 5 February 2015, we consulted on proposed reforms to improve the police complaints and disciplinary system.
The proposed changes will ensure:
- the police complaints system will become more independent of the police
- the police disciplinary system is improved so that it holds officers to account for their behaviour
- charities and advocacy groups are able to lodge complaints on behalf of the public
- new protection for police whistleblowers
- new powers for the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) to strengthen its role as an independent body
